Guarding the HouseDear Wylie, My dog Toby frequently runs to the front of the house and barks continually until I come to see what he's barking at. On occasion, it'll be one of my neighbors, walking up the street. More often than not however, there's nothing out there! Toby's a good boy, but what's all the ruckus?
Jim
Dear Jim, Toby is a good boy! Toby's a very good boy! As a member of your pack, one of Toby's responsibilities is to protect the house against intruders. (In return, you assume legal liability when he digs up the neighbor's prize begonias.) In the course of fulfilling this responsibility, Toby is no doubt using all his senses to their fullest potential. As a general rule, dogs have better senses of smell and hearing than humans. Just because you don't see the invisible squirrels doesn't mean they aren't there.
